1. *War Against Ourselves* carries an intense title that immediately attracts attention. What inspired this concept, and what message did you want listeners to take away from the album as a whole?
“War Against Ourselves” concept has been inspired by my direct experience and the ones of the people I met that are facing their mental illnesses. It is a constant inner confrontation because this kind of diseases are deeply rooted into someone’s mind, they constantly try to emerge, change your behavior, take control of your life. I hope that these songs can give some strength to those who are fighting and help those who are not to understand what it feels like, and abandon their biases.
2. Your music combines brutality with atmosphere rather than relying solely on aggression. How important is songwriting and dynamics when composing a Demidead track?
It is fundamental to keep the song dynamic. I personally find hard to listen songs that are too repetitive, but when we compose, we try to avoid any restriction about what the song could be, and only focus on follow its flow.
3. Every band eventually reaches a point where it discovers its own identity. Was there a particular song or moment in your career when you felt Demidead had truly found its signature sound?
Our sound is ever-evolving. Just right now we are developing a massive new sound because we think that the search for a better way to express what we feel should not be limited by any preconception. Nonetheless, the core part of our sound remains, and I think could be found especially in songs like “When My Demons Overcome”, “Rorschach Test” and “Revelation Within”.
4. The modern death metal scene is more diverse than ever, with countless subgenres and influences. How do you see Demidead fitting into today’s extreme metal landscape while maintaining its individuality?
I truly believe that Demidead fits perfectly in that part of the death metal scene that avoid any elitist mindset, that part that is actively searching for new ways of making people mosh, feel great and enjoy shows without had to constantly judge everything.
5. Studio recordings and live performances often demand different approaches. How do you balance reproducing your songs faithfully on stage while keeping the performance energetic and spontaneous?
We believe that connecting with the audience has the priority on the stage. Even if we play the recorded songs, we decide to be more flexible and to enrich the show from the base intention, to avoid becoming a “human-flesh” streaming service. Technology sometimes helps to deliver a precise show but we do not forget where the soul resides.
6. Touring brings both unforgettable moments and unexpected challenges. Is there a funny, chaotic, or memorable experience from the road that has become part of the band’s history?
We had a show in Vienna in October 2024. We decided to travel by car: hard but worthy the challenge. After the show I hit the parking lot to retrieve the car to load the stuff and go sleep but, due to tiredness and some wrong indications, I took a street the wrong way on my way back to the venue, hitting a police car in the process and smashing my front bumper and hood. Long story short, the car needed 7 days of fixing, so me and Dave bought some resin epoxy, zip ties, black duct tape and put everything together. I drove for 8-hour straight, thanks to a couple of Monsters, and we came back safely crossing the Alps during a snow storm. Absolute cinema.
7. Extreme metal has always been driven by passion rather than commercial success. What continues to motivate you to create and perform after all these years?
As you said, passion. Music helped me a lot to go through the hardest times of my life and that always gave me fuel for my passion and determination.
8. Technology has dramatically changed the way bands record, promote, and connect with audiences. In your opinion, what are the biggest advantages—and disadvantages—of being a metal band in today’s digital era?
Unfortunately, we have already passed the times when technology helped the artists more damaging them. Right now, almost everyone with some times and efforts can pull out a decent record, but it’s almost impossible to use social media as a launch platform like before, because they are fully saturated. Not to mention AI companies that are stealing the work of millions of artists to train algorithms that can make everyone a terrible artist…wonderful…
9. Looking beyond music itself, are there any books, films, historical events, or personal experiences that have significantly influenced your creativity or artistic vision?
Everything can be inspirational. For example, I started writing down the lyrics for “Revelation Within” after seeing the first episode of “American Horror Story – Apocalypse”. For this reason, we try to keep ourselves inspired but not too much bounded to anything in particular.
10. If someone who has never heard Demidead before could listen to just one of your songs, which track would you choose to introduce the band, and why do you think it best represents who you are today?
The song “War Against Ourselves” of course, because it condensed the evolution of our style and our last album altogether. Its lyrics talks about the difficulty encountered while facing depression and I think it can help people understand what it feels like.
